Hireology Career Mobility Spotlight: Mike McSherry

At Hireology, we put a lot of focus on cultivating a work culture that caters to the employee experience. In fact, our leadership team prides itself on striving to make Hireology the best place you ever work.

Achieving this goal takes dedication and intention, which you can find in our competitive pay, benefits, and remote work options — but we don’t stop there! Our career growth opportunities and mobility offerings are top of class too; we want to support our people no matter where they are in their career so that they are fully prepared to make their next move, regardless of what that move may be. Each year, hundreds of employees experience both traditional and non-traditional career growth at Hireology; these opportunities allow them to expand their skills, gain new experiences, and feel fulfilled in their day-to-day work.

Each month, we’re featuring a different employee who has grown professionally at Hireology in our new Career Mobility Spotlight blog series. For June, we’re focusing on Mike McSherry, Account Executive turned Director of Strategic Partnerships. MIke’s career at Hireology is a great example of how Hireology encourages our employees to try new paths in their careers, all thanks to our great culture.

When did you start with Hireology? What role did you start in? What role are you in currently?

I started at Hireology in September 2014 as an Account Executive. Today, I’m the Director of Strategic Partnerships.

Describe how you’ve grown professionally since you started working for us.

I arrived at Hireology in 2014 with zero software sales experience and a huge desire to prove myself after leaving a career as an attorney. Cutting my teeth in sales here, especially on the original automotive team, turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to me after I left the law for two reasons. First, it introduced me to an industry that truly excites me and a group of people I love working with. And second, it opened the door to the world of strategic partnerships, an ever-changing discipline that challenges and inspires me to think big and drive even bigger returns.

What have been your most significant achievements working for Hireology?

I’m most proud of three achievements at Hireology. First, it’s seeing Hireologists I’ve coached or managed go on to become top performers and leaders here or elsewhere. Second, it’s closing some of the largest deals in the company’s early history — many of which are still with us today! And third, it’s expanding our partnerships team into all Hireology verticals and our overall influence on company revenue. Oh, and did I mention I formed the company’s first band, the Smoking Beakers?

What’s the best advice you can give to someone who is looking to move up in their role or has shown interest in a different role ro department?

Be curious. If you see another department or individual whose work intrigues you, take the initiative to learn more from them. Career growth opportunities abound at Hireology and the people who create their own luck here tend to move up or across departments the fastest. If it’s not the right role for you, hey, at least you’ve walked in someone else’s shoes.

What do you like about our company culture?

I’ve always loved the authenticity of Hireology’s culture. When I boomeranged back here after a two-year stint at another company, I was thrilled — but not surprised — to see the same types of caring, empathetic people and atmosphere as before. That genuinely feel-good environment — which our leadership built from Day 1 — epitomizes Pete Drucker’s famous quote that “culture eats strategy for breakfast.”

What’s the best advice you can give to someone just starting out at the company?

Take the time to really understand our customers’ and partners’ businesses and respective industries. I think there’s no greater attribute for a SaaS platform than to be able to empathize with the companies and people it serves. Because we are industry specific, we’re in a unique position to forge stronger relationships and deliver more enhanced value than industry agnostic companies. Embrace that and you’ll go far.

Which one of Hireology’s Core Values or belief statements resonate with you the most? Why?

Own the Result. We all know the importance of accountability. Naming it as a core value further solidifies its role as a driving force behind Hireology’s culture and impact in the market. It’s natural to point the finger when something doesn’t go our way. So, for me, this core value serves as a constant reminder to focus on what I can control and strive to deliver my best work no matter the external circumstances.
