One of the biggest issues currently facing the retail automotive industry is hiring and retaining service technicians.
According to Automotive News, ‘There’s a general consensus in the industry that there’s a serious shortage of automotive technicians able to work on today’s advanced cars and trucks.’ There are various reasons for this, such as a shortage of tech schools and the fact that those entering the workforce are unaware of the career paths associated with tech school education.
The nation’s demand for service technicians is expected to grow an additional seven percent in 2017, making this the biggest year yet in the war for technician talent. Additionally, as we head into 2017 with an increased need for service and repairs, dealerships must be prepared for overworked techs and a shortage of skilled technicians.
This issue isn’t going away anytime soon, so what can dealers do to fix this problem? The majority of dealers across the country are currently using Craigslist or job boards to find auto techs-but it’s not working. If dealers want to find right talent (that’ll stick around for the long run), they have to know how to go about doing so.
