But are you asking candidates weird questions? Sometimes such questions can tell a lot about a person, and whether or not they would be a good culture fit. But sometimes the questions are just so quirky that candidates leave the interview wondering “…did they really just ask me that?”.
Glassdoor put together a list of the 25 weirdest job interview questions of 2012. These are our favorites:
“A penguin walks through that door right now wearing a sombrero. What does he say and why is he here?” – asked at Clark Construction Group
We’d recommend that each of their candidates watch Frozen Planet to learn how sombrero-wearing penguins act in their natural habitat.
“What song best describes your work ethic?” – Asked at Dell
So Sky Pilot probably isn’t the best answer, at least not at Dell.
“What do you think about when you are alone in your car?” – Asked at Gallup
That I’m really good at singing Sky Pilot.
Asking unusal questions can give you great insight to a candidate’s thought-process. Every question you ask shouldn’t follow this format; after all, it’s an interview, not a stress test.
We don’t include any such questions on our interview guides because we’ve found other ways to gauge the candidate on various levels. More importantly, using the guides provides you with a way to accurately score each candidate, rather than just deciding if you like their answer or not.
