Nobody likes seeing a large pile of resumes waiting for them in the morning. This huge pile is a daunting task that will require more of their time, taking away from other important tasks. Hiring managers often put off the pile of resumes or attempt to find a way to speed the process up by skipping over important factors. Luckily, Tom Gimbel of Lasalle Network has provided 7 secrets to making the resume sorting process much quicker.
First, Gimbel gives 4 things that you should do in order to make your process smoother.
1. Paper vs. Digital
Either paper or digital resumes are acceptable. However, it is important that managers realize that they cannot combine the two. You must choose between the two and stick to it. If you prefer paper, print out the resumes and analyze them. If you’re a more technological person, sort through the resumes digitally.
2. Schedule it once a day.
Setting aside a specific time every day to go through resumes will create a rhythm, which in return will keep managers motivated to look at the resumes. It is important that managers view resumes as a task that needs to be done. This will minimize the likelihood of managers pushing the pile aside.
3. Establish 3 qualifications.
Going through each resume completely will be very confusing as well as time consumer. Instead, managers should choose three criteria that are required of candidates and sort through the pile using these. These criteria should be based off of the type of job as well as the type of person the company is looking to hire.
4. Use buckets.
Sort the resumes using buckets. Put all resumes that meet the three criteria into one bucket and put all other resumes into a second bucket. After sorting them into two buckets, sort through the first bucket for likely candidates. If you can’t find any or can only find a few, look through the second bucket again.
Next, Gimbel gives 3 things you should not do. These will make your process less successful as well as take much more time.
1. Obsess over the fact that you missed out.
Every company misses out on candidates that are the perfect fit for their company. It is important for managers to accept this fact before going into the resume analyzing process. Obsessing over a missed opportunity may cause you to miss out on even more opportunities.
2. Falling in love quickly.
You may come across what you think is the perfect candidate and want to stop the search immediately because you’ve found the one. Managers must make sure to finish sorting the resumes and resorting the resumes before making a decision. Falling in love with a candidate can be very detrimental to the company in the long run.
3. Assuming you’re number one.
All managers think that their company is the absolute best option for candidates to apply for. However, candidates usually do not know this. If someone applies for your job, more likely than not, they are applying for other jobs as well. Because of this, it is important to remember when offering a job, there is a chance of rejection.
Using these tips will help to make your resume pile diminish much quicker and will also help you to succeed in finding and hiring the perfect candidate for your job.
