SMB Hiring Tools: How to protect your business

There’s a lot of risk when it comes to hiring employees – especially for small businesses. Not only do you want to make sure the candidate you hire is a culture fit, but you also want someone who has the skills and passion. With bad hiring decisions costing upwards of $50,000, it’s no wonder why many SMB owners are hesitant to bring new employees onto the team. 

But trying to juggle everything by yourself (or with help from a few employees) isn’t going to be possible, or productive, much longer. So sooner than later you’re going to have to make a hiring decision. Though there’s always going to be a small risk that the candidate you hire isn’t going to work out, but there are measures you can take to ensure this risk is minimal. Let’s take a look at a few of the options:

Background Screens

There are a variety of background screens you can administer. From county, state and national criminal records to sex offender registries and bankruptcy records, background screens can tell you a lot about a candidate. Helping to increase workplace safety and reduce employee theft, background screens can provide assurance knowing the person you are hiring is who they say they are.

Skills Tests

Skills tests are another great tool to verify your candidate has the knowledge and experience they claim to have. By asking the candidate a variety of questions related to the position, you are able to gauge their proficiency and whether it is suitable for the position

Employment Verification 

Also known as reference checks, employment verification services confirm the candidate’s job history. By reaching out to former managers and supervisors, this type of verification is most commonly used to verify employment and measure the employer’s satisfaction with your candidate.

Each of these verification services does come at a cost; however, you may be surprised at their affordability. Before you decide which tests you would like to administer, do some research and see which ones would be the best fit for you and the company. Remember, a little money spent up front on verification tests can save you thousands on turnover down the road.
