Small business owners must have a pretty extensive toolkit in order to run their business. Between accounting, marketing, sales, and finance tools it’s hard to find time to squeeze in time to build a great team. Unfortunately you have to hire the right person, and that just takes time.
Many SMB owners wonder what tools and technologies they will need in order to select the right person for the job. Lucky them because we’ve written plenty of posts (check them out here and here) about the tools they will need. However what hiring tools should you avoid?
Many small business owners think that a resume tracker is the cat’s pajamas because of it’s ability to take their very unorganized hiring process and make it, well, organized. However a resume tracker doesn’t provide any tools to help you figure out who you should hire. If you are looking to organize your hiring process, you need a selection management system, not a resume tracker.
There are hundreds of video interviewing companies popping up all around these days. Let’s admit, they are pretty cool. A hiring manager develops the interview questions and sends it to the candidate, the candidate records themselves answering the question and sends it back to the hiring manager. Seems simple right? Supposedly.
Video interviewing will cut down your interviewing time but it won’t help you decide who to choose as your next team member. It might actually hurt your process because you will never have met your potential hire in person, therefore you won’t have any idea what they are like out of their environment. Do yourself a favor and limit the video interviews to desperate situations. (Like when your developer candidate has another job offer on the table and he lives in Ohio and you need to interview him NOW!)
Resume parsing was a huge fad that sunk quickly. There are however, some applicant tracking systems that still provide parsing. It’s the process of stripping all of the words and letters out of a resume and cover letter and running them through a computer that has a code or algorithm that looks for series of words and phrases. Resume parsers are about 70% accurate. Which means 30% of the time the computer is discarding qualified applicants that simply did not include the right words on their resume. Not good.
Instead of parsing candidate’s resumes, try a pre-screening survey to narrow your candidates down by experience and qualifications, not words on their resumes.
Lie Detector Tools
Sound crazy? It’s not! We had a company approach us at a trade show offering to implement their lie detector tool into our platform. Before we could turn them down they told us that you can tell a bad hire/liar by their face shape. Can you say ILLEGAL? Our Product Development Director was appalled! That is a lawsuit waiting to happen when you tell a candidate you can’t hire him/her because their face says they are a bad hire…
Needless to say, don’t fall victim to purchasing any lie detector tools.
In conclusion hiring for your small business is a daunting task. You need the right tools and technologies in order to hire the right people, stay away from tools above they will only waste your time and empty your wallet.
