Six ways to amp up employee engagement

To start, do me a favor and ask yourself the following questions: Do your employees truly care about the success of your company? Do they walk in the door with a smile on their face and seem ready to work hard? If you answered “no” to either of these questions, it’s time to get down to business and amp them up again. 

First things first: you’re not alone. Take a look at these statistics from a recent Inc article:

70% — The percentage of employees working in the United States who are not working to their full potential. 

450 to 550 billion dollars are wasted every year in lost productivity associated with the high number of disengaged employees.

I don’t know about you, but to me, that’s a lot of money. By following these six tips, you can develop a staff that wants to be there, excels in their position, continues to work hard, and will stick with your company through thick and thin. 

1. Let them have a voice 

Give them the option to provide feedback if they’d like to. If you want your employees to be passionate about the company, you need to let them give their opinions on certain issues. Joie de Vivre Hotels founder Chip Conley held a series of retreats to ask workers how they would turn things around for the popular, west coast chain. “The more you give people a voice, the more they step up,” he said. This will make them feel more invested in the business and work harder to succeed. 

2. Be flexible

This is a tough one. As a manager, it’s sometimes difficult to accept things not going the way you initially thought they would. If an employee comes to you asking for an extension-allow it.  Sometimes getting the job done a little later than expected, but in an exceptional way, is better than making crucial mistakes and finishing it on time.

3. Change it up 

Let’s face it. People get bored. Grab your things and take the team to a park to work for the day because…why not? This is a small gesture that will keep them engaged and is a nice change of pace once in awhile. 

4. Hire better bosses 

A recent survey showed that 65% of staff members would prefer a better boss over a raise. People don’t quit companies; they run away from horrible bosses. If you notice unhappiness, take a look at how they are being treated by their superiors. Are they educating them or making them feel alienated? No one wants an office bully.

5.  Communicate

Always keep your employees in the loop. If they’re left in the dark, they’ll start to make up their own version of what’s going on and it’s rarely a positive one. It’s understandable to feel ashamed and wanting to hide a negative situation, but you’ll never grow as a cohesive company unless you all face those challenges together. 

6. Reward them

My favorite motto: Work hard, play hard. It’s what we go by at Hireology and it’s proven to be nothing but successful. If you provide rewards and incentives for hitting goals, your team will work harder to reach them. Guaranteed.
