Millennials Are Taking Over – It’s Time to Embrace It

There are hundreds of new articles published everyday regarding the role of millennials in the workplace. Some claim they’re lazy and entitled, and should be avoided at all costs. Others say that millennial employees are the best greatest thing since sliced bread. But then there are articles that make an effort to be accurate, to present both the benefits and challenges of hiring millennials – articles like that of Forbes Contributor Rob Asghar

Asghar’s article, What Millennials Want In The Workplace (And Why You Should Start Giving It To Them),explains that it is time for employers and managers to – for lack of a better summary – suck it up and realize it’s time to start paying attention to millennials. After all, Intelligence Group expects that by 2020, over 40 percent of the workforce will be millennials – that’s over 86 million people!

Now it’s understandable that some people struggle with change more than others, but that is not an excuse to disregard the benefits millennials bring to the workplace. They’ve proven themselves to be dedicated, passionate employees. Sure, some prefer to leave the office a few hours early on Friday afternoons, but they’re also the ones you’ll find online Saturday night responding to work emails. Jamie Gutfreund of Intelligence Group said it best (in Asghar’s article) when she explained, “It’s in every organization’s interest to learn how to attract and reach and motivated millennials. A few do it well – but most don’t, and they soon may pay a price.” 

For those of you still hesitant, maybe these stats from Intelligence Group will change your mind on millennials:

  • 88 percent prefer a collaborative work-culture (as opposed to a competitive one)
  • 79 percent want a boss to “serve more as a coach or mentor”
  • 64 percent say it’s a priority to make the world a better place
