Millennial Monday: What Millennials Want From Your Internship

Aaaand we’re back. Happy Monday everyone! (or is it?) From what I’m reading on the Twittersphere, people aren’t too thrilled to be back. Personally, I couldn’t agree more. After attempting to navigate the 2.9 million people at the Hawks parade on Friday, it’s safe to say that I’m pretty defeated. But defeated as I am, I still had to come in to work today.

As I zombied my way into the office just as many of you did today, I imagined how difficult these mornings must be for people who don’t enjoy their job. I mean, I’ll admit, waking up at 5:30 does get old after a while. But once I get into the office, any frustration from the morning commute is gone. I don’t know about you but I feel like that’s a total blessing in disguise. 

But why the blog post? Great question! I’m glad you asked.

The fact is, you’re going to need millennials on your team sooner or later. They’re available, and you’re hiring. But what steps are you taking to make your job more appealing compared to others? It can’t really be all about office sofas and extended lunch hours (but honestly who can complain about that).

We’ve compiled a list of three things all millennials are expecting to get out of their internship.

1. Involvement  

When I was on the internship hunt, I knew what I was looking for. I needed a professional environment that allowed me to further develop my marketing skills. With all the interview talk aside, I was searching for a company that I could impact with my work. Too many times I hear stories about internships where the job of the intern is to sit in a boardroom and take notes. With all do respect, that’s not an internship. That’s called school. While technically we’re supposed to be learning in our internships, the best way to retain information and become a professional is through hands-on experience.

 2. Social Work Environment

Millennials aren’t only tech-savvy, but we’re social. The combination of the two
characteristics yields an extremely outgoing individual who surrounds himself with constant
 social interaction. It makes sense that this is one of the  main  priorities for millennials in their internship search.  According to  a survey by PGI, 88% of millennials want a  social workplace.  Not  only will a social and entertaining  workplace attract  millennials to your position, but it will  boost your company  culture as well. The only downside to  providing a social work  environment is the generation gap  that may or may not already  exist. In that same survey,  only 60% Gen X’ers claimed they could work in a social workplace. Acknowledge the generation gap, and understand that hiring millennials can come at a cost.

 3. Connectivity

If you’re thinking about banning electronic devices from your workplace, you could be committing employer suicide. Millennials are the most connected generation. We have grown up with sources like Google and the television at our disposal. Failing to utilize those sources in your workplace only makes your company look less appealing. In the PGI survey, 70% of millennials own a smartphone and 76% believe that cloud computing will be more important in 5-10 years. Perhaps it’s finally time to take that next-step in becoming a technologically advanced firm. Millennials will love you for it, and productivity will almost surely increase.
