How We Decided to Select a Partner For Candidate Background Checks

Product Spotlight: Integrating with Accurate Background

As a product evolves, one of the biggest questions to ask is whether to develop new features internally or bring in a partner to deliver off-the-shelf solutions. It’s something we’ve had to answer many times, resulting in a blend of enhancements we’ve built as well as integrations with external partners we see as subject matter experts.

We recently asked this question when we enhanced the Hireology background screening experience, ultimately selecting Accurate Background as our partner.

This lead us to research companies we saw as experts in the candidate verification space, capable of quickly and effectively running the services our customers require: background checks, drug screening, employment verification, and motor vehicle reports.

We spoke with several companies specializing in running these types of background checks for businesses. Each offered a variety of verification services, and a few offered unique capabilities to differentiate their service. We also learned about the technical capabilities each vendor offered. This varied across the board, from no integration support to those with a complete API offering.

Evaluating each possible customer experience to see what could work best for our users was our next step. With Accurate Background, one of the key differentiators was their Background Check API and ability to deeply integrate with our existing Hireology user flow, minimizing the extra work and training our customers would need to manage their background checks.

As an added bonus, Accurate automates much of the applicant authorization process, saving hiring managers time while eliminating the potential for errors that occur through a more manual process. We saw this as a huge value since it was something our customers commonly requested, and a key component not offered by other companies we evaluated.

What should I be looking for?

When we shortlisted a few vendors, we asked a few questions to help us ultimately select Accurate:

  • Can the provider truly integrate with our existing customer experience?
  • Does the integration require substantial retraining of existing customers?
  • Is the vendor creating a high-value service for us and our customers?
  • Does the vendor have a good reputation, and do you see them as a long-term partner?

For Hireology, selecting Accurate Background was an easy choice, as they were the only provider that satisfied all of our criteria. We were able to integrate their verification services within our user workflow, allowing our customers to request and review a variety of verification services completely within their Hireology account.

What were the Results?

The Accurate Background integration dramatically decreased the amount of time to background check new hires – enough for many Hireology customers to start running regular background checks on all new employees: something we consider a best practice for all final-round candidates. And since this is managed within the existing Hireology user experience, our customers quickly took to the new verification capabilities.

We’re excited to work with Accurate Background and follow the same criteria when evaluating any new possible partnership. For us, it’s a strategic decision to integrate with a partner, and having an objective process to follow helps us select a service objectively.
