How to Hire your Super Bowl Winning Quarterback

It’s Super Bowl week! Are you excited for the “big game?” Or could you care less? Either way you probably know that this is one of the biggest TV events of the year.

Both teams have a stacked offense and defense, but the biggest buzz, is over the two star quarterbacks: Veteran Peyton Manning and Super Bowl first-timer Russell Wilson.

Wilson and Manning are as different as they are the same. Both are quarterbacks and team leaders, but they have a 13-year age difference and completely opposite play styles. So here’s the question, what if you were deciding whether to hire Russell Wilson or Peyton Manning for a job?

Many hiring managers are faced with dilemmas similar to this daily. Do you hire the veteran candidate who has years of experience but is close to retirement, or do you choose the young millennial who is motivated, driven, but less experienced?

If you are stuck in this situation, don’t panic, we’ve got some advice.

Compare interview scores

If you’ve read our interview scoring guide, you know how important scoring your interviews is. If you’ve interviewed both a Wilson and a Manning, the scores will be close, but they should tell you who the better hire is.

If you haven’t scored your interviews, you can take a look at the answers to the behavioral questions you asked them and decide which questions are most important to your job.

Look at past behaviors

If their interview scores don’t help, look at their past behavior. Which candidate has had direct experience in the role you are hiring for? Which candidate has displayed success in that role?

Peyton Manning has been to two Super Bowls and won one, while Wilson has no post season championship experience. The answer should be clear here.

Culture Fit is important

If their interview scores aren’t clear, and their past behaviors are relatively similar, then it’s time to look at culture fit. Which candidate would fit into your company culture better? Would they get along with your team? Would their work ethic be accepted?

Manning is known for his classic, old-school, and mocked (See SNL skit) locker room behavior. He is endorsed by brands that appeal to the older generations such as: Papa Johns, DirecTV, and Pepsi. Wilson on the other hand is endorsed by millennial favorite brands such as: Levi’s and Nike. He is known for his frequent locker room dances and “selfie” snaps which makes him likable to the younger crowd.

Wilson is a better culture fit in a more millennial-heavy office where the work ethic is casual and laid back while Manning would excel in an office that is professional focused.

Choose the candidate that is a better culture fit, it’s proven they will stay around longer and produce better work then someone who is not a good fit.
