Hiring Top Performers: The primary indicator of success

Chances are you’ve never heard the term Locus of Control before. That’s ok, even some of us Hireologists didn’t know what it was. Luckily, our product development director Margot Nash has us covered. 

So, what exactly is LOC? In psychology terms, it is “the extent to which individuals believe that they can control events that affect them.” In hiring terms, determining whether a job candidate or current employee has an internal or external LOC can help predict their success within a given role. 

It sounds more complicated than it really is, so try thinking about it this way: Would you rather hire a candidate that is proactive and takes ownership of outcomes or someone who blames those around them for negative results? You would probably pick the first candidate, right? Well those attributes are associated with having an internal Locus of Control, whereas the latter are said to have an external LOC.

When hiring, looking for traits associated with internal LOC can help determine the likelihood of a candidate being successful within the role. So before you make any more hiring decisions, be sure to read “Hiring Top Performers: The primary indicator of success.”
