Hiring for the Culture and the Job

When looking to hire employees for your dealership, you’ve got to find candidates who not only are qualified for the job but also adhere to the ideals of your company. Many applicants will have the skills and experience to be successful, but can they represent the culture of your dealership in a successful way?

Today, Hireology takes a deeper look into how you can find the right candidate that can fit your dealership’s goals as a business as well as its culture. Here’s what to look for when choosing your staff:

1) Quality of Work vs. Quantity of Work

When interviewing potential candidates, try to get a feel for what kind of worker they are. You’ll want to look for someone who is motivated to do the job and who can excel in a given situation. More importantly, you want employees who can offer you more than just numbers. Put them to the test and see how well they can communicate with customers. You’ll be able to see if they can not only bring in sales, but also build long lasting relationships.

2) Building Loyalty

Along with returning buyers come loyal customers. Word of a successful and friendly dealership can spread fast in a community, and you want your employees to get their clients talking. A dealership’s reputation is important for long term service and success, so look for candidates who show motivation and passion for the job. Make sure they know the company, too. An employee can’t represent a brand if they know nothing about it. Candidates should be able to show knowledge not only about the industry, but also your particular dealership.

3) Look Beneath the Resume and Cover Letter

Previous related experience and an extensive skill set certainly looks good on a resume, but it is important to ask yourself if that person actually matches what is written on the paper. Many candidates will come to you well qualified for the job but maybe not well suited for your dealership. Look past the words on the resume and focus on what unique skills an individual could bring to your team. For this reason, it’s important to ask the right interview questions and administer personality assessments to find out more about what your kind of employee you are hiring. This will give you actual analytical data and validation about how they would fit into the dealership and whether or not they would be an asset to the rest of your staff. You want employees who bring something different to the table while suiting your dealership well.

In general, seek out individuals who are motivated, passionate and driven to provide your dealership with an ample amount of time and effort to succeed. The world is full of young and hungry hopefuls, who are looking to bring quality work to the auto industry. Take advantage of the talent and find employees who will fit well into your culture and, ultimately, move it forward.
