Hiring After Labor Day: What you need to know

Now that the long Labor Day weekend is over, it’s the perfect time for hiring outstanding employees. We all know that a vacation is meant for recharging the mind and relieving some stress.

Vacations also provide ample time for people to think about their careers and where they are headed. According to a new study by Monster.com, 75 percent of employees are more likely to search for a new job upon returning from vacation.  That is a huge increase from a year ago, when 37 percent were more likely to job hunt after a vacation.

Advice Expert for Monster.com, Mary Ellen Slayter, says ‘Vacations are a great time for self assessment. They offer free time, relaxation and detachment from your day-to-day routine,’ and apparently make you not want to go back to your job.

How can you take advantage of the increase in job seekers? 

Post to Job Boards:

An increase in candidate traffic will result from frequent job postings after Labor Day. Also consider the fact that the kiddos are finally back in school, so most parents are looking to get back on the grind – where will they head? Job boards of course.

Whether it’s a flexible, work-from-home position or the typical, 9 to 5, moms and dads need to fill their free time and will be looking on the job boards daily.

Recruit via Social Media 

As much as we don’t want to believe it, summer is officially over. Summer internships recently came to an end, so all of the recent grads out there have to think about their next moves.  They spent the past three months taking in as much information as possible. Now, they are looking to put their knowledge to the test in hopes of finding a full-time position.

This demographic is also an ideal age group to hire as you can mold them into the employee you want to them to be.  They have learned the core requirements for a certain position, however they have yet to really work for another company. This is where you come in.

A recent Forbes article mentioned that ‘job-seekers frequently use social networking sites to make professional connections and search for employment opportunities.’ This is your chance to reciprocate by utilizing social media platforms to find prospective candidates.  

So, before the leaves start falling from the trees and the Bears score their first touchdown (knock on wood – that could be awhile), set your company up for success by building a great team. The cream of the crop is out there and they’re ready to work.
