Game of Thrones: A Song of Ice and Fired

If you are a Game of Thrones fan like me, then you are probably eagerly anticipating these next two weeks as Season 4 winds down.

Here are the questions I keep asking: Who dies? Who lives? And most of all, who will rule the Iron Throne when the season ends?

As the seven kingdoms duke it out to determine who will take the ancient throne, it’s hard not to notice the modern lessons viewers can take away from the show. The most epic are the death’s of main characters. (Crossing my fingers Tyrion doesn’t get killed off!)

Instead of going all Kingslayer on your CEO, review how Game of Thrones teaches us a few lessons on who to keep and who to fire.

Keep the Dedicated Employee

If the name “Jon Snow” doesn’t send shivers down your spine, then you might be A. Not a girl, or B. Ygritte, his ex-girlfriend and member of the rival Wilding clan. Snow is the character that’s been through it all: Bastard son of Ned Stark makes him an instant outcast, he’s a member of the celibate Night’s Watch, and finally he was almost killed by his fiery ex-girlfriend.

As a character that’s been through it all and still pursues goodness and righteousness, he’s one to watch when it comes to the taking of the throne. 

Keeping dedicated and driven Jon Snow-like employees around will encourage your employees to mirror their actions and engage the overall company.

Fire the Drama-Starting Employee

The name Cersei Lannister should send chills down your spine, but for all the opposite reasons as Jon Snow. Cersei is potentially the most evil character now that ***SEASON 4 SPOILER ALERT*** her son Joffrey is dead.

She is known for blackmailing her accomplices, turning people against eachother, compulsively lying, and ruling the kingdom on fear and power.

An employee that does even 10% of what Cersei has done in the four seasons should face serious implications. An employee with Cersei’s attitude and desire for destruction (not to mention her inappropriate fraternizing) is damaging to a company’s culture and employee happiness.

Get rid of this destructive employee before your office environment is ruined.

Promote the Hard Worker

Brienne of Tarth is not the kind of woman you want to cross. She vowed loyalty to Catelyn of Stark and kidnapped the Kingslayer (Jaime Lannister) and drug him across the 7 kingdoms. However she dreams of becoming a knight and works endlessly on her swordship.

When Brienne returns Jaime safely to King’s Landing, Jaime gifts Brienne with a new suit of armor, the Valyrian steel sword, and Tyrion Lannister’s former squire.

By being promoted and recognized, Brienne will be motivated to work harder and achieve her goals of finding the Stark girls to achieve their dead mother’s wishes.

If you have a hard worker in your office, it’s smart to recognize and promote their to encourage a motivated work ethic among employees. 

The Game of Thrones season 4 finale airs on June 15, 2014. Tune in and see who get’s fired and who gets… well.. killed.
