Franchise Management: Grabbing the Attention of Millennials

It is no secret to employers that millennials, or those born between 1982 and 2000, are rapidly populating the workforce.  It is estimated that by 2025, millennials will make up about 75 percent of the workforce, meaning your franchise’s employee make-up will soon include a large number of this up-and-coming generation-if it doesn’t already. With another school year wrapping up, freshly graduated millennials will be looking for jobs, and their possibilities are endless.

Personally Recruiting Generation Y

The hiring landscape has changed, and companies are now beginning to fight for the candidate’s attention.

Besides using channels that you know Gen Y is using, such as social media platforms and job listing sites, consider taking it a step forward and literally coming to where they live. Send people in your company to college career fairs and networking events at community colleges and technical schools to connect with millennials face to face. Perhaps, start working through career centers and student professional clubs to offer programs while they are still in school to help give them a more hands-on experience with your brand.  

Be On the Cutting Edge 

Now, a personal touch is important in keeping Gen Y engaged, but aside from recruiting them where they live, you should also recruit them where they spend their time-specifically online. It’s no secret that today’s young people spend an excessive amount of their day glued to their phones and tablets. That is important information, especially if your brand is trying to get their attention. That being said, here are a few tips your franchise should be following to stay relevant:        

  • Engage on social media: Social network use continues to grow year over year. According to Inc. magazine, 67 percent of first time job seekers use social media to look for work, and LinkedIn has a 40 percent market share of U.S. online job seekers.
  • A mobile-friendly, branded site: The same article says 87 percent of companies are not investing adequately in mobile-friendly recruitment, while 1 billion job searches are performed on mobile devices each month. This equates to countless lost opportunities if your site isn’t properly optimized.
  • Embrace Technology: Millennials are more likely to respond to unconventional interview methods such as Skype interviews or even video resumes.
