Name: Lindsey Branding

Team: Finance

Role: Director of Finance and Controller

Lindsey has been with Hireology since February 2016. She was promoted to Director of Finance in 2018 and oversees the daily finance and accounting operations.

Lindsey, can you tell readers a bit about what you’re working on?

We just wrapped up our 2018 financial statement audit, which is a huge undertaking, so we’re happy to have that behind us. Up next, we’re closing the books for the previous month and with that, preparing our monthly financial statements to be shared with our Leadership team and Board members. Additionally, we are scoping out implementation of a new accounting system, as well as getting ready to kick off our 2020 budget planning.

What path did you take to get where you are today?

I graduated from the University of Kansas with a Bachelors of Science and a Masters in Accounting. Following school, I obtained my CPA license and started my career at Deloitte in Assurance Services out of their Kansas City office.

After 3 years, I was looking for a change, both in my job and my surroundings, so I packed my bags for Chicago and joined Groupon’s Finance team. While at Groupon, I held various positions within the Finance organization, most notably working in their Investor Relations and FP&A groups.

I’m really appreciative of my experiences at Groupon but I missed the company’s high-growth period, so I knew in my next role I wanted to join a company that was in their growth life cycle stage. As fate would have it, I received a note out of the blue from an old colleague about an exciting opportunity at a fast-growing tech company — Hireology! He thought because of my background in accounting and finance that I’d be a great fit for a new role they were opening. And here we are today.

What made you join Hireology?

I joined Hireology because of the opportunity to make an impact and help grow a business. There is so much opportunity in front of us and with the right team in place, we’re poised to capture it. I wanted to join an organization that was moving quickly and I have not been disappointed.

What do you find most exciting about working here?

Everyday is a new challenge. I know this is cliche, but honestly, no two days are the same. I am constantly presented with new opportunities and challenges, which keeps things fresh and exciting. That’s the great thing about Hireology — you can pretty much raise your hand for anything so you get a lot of exposure to different areas of the business. Because of this, employees can expand their knowledge base pretty quickly. I love that.

What is your favorite core value and why?

My favorite core value is “Eager to Improve.” It’s important to stay curious and continue to push your boundaries. I appreciate the opportunities Hireology has given me to grow and learn from new experiences.

Where in the office do you do your best thinking?

I do my best thinking at my desk, which overlooks the Chicago river and ferris wheel at Navy Pier. It really is a spectacular view. If I need to tune out the noise around me, I’ll pop my headphones in and listen to music. One of my favorite albums to work to is Bing and Ruth’s “No Home of the Mind” (who happens to be my brother!).

How would you define Hireology’s culture?

Hireology’s culture is special and unlike any workplace culture I’ve experienced. Our core values are very important to us and every employee believes in and embodies them. It makes coming to work every day pleasant and fun. We push each other but we do it in a respectful and supportive way.

What is one thing that people don’t know about you?

Most people don’t know that I used to be a triathlon junkie and I finished a half Ironman (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run). While I don’t train anymore, I can regularly be found taking fitness classes at SoulCycle or Orangetheory. Working out is very therapeutic for me so I try to stay very active.

One of Hireology’s benefits that we offer employees is unlimited vacation. What will you be doing next to utilize this perk?

A lot of my trips this spring and summer revolve around weddings (‘tis the season!) so a lot of my immediate time off revolves around those celebrations. I’ve always appreciated how flexible Hireology is when I need to take time off.
