5 Small Business Hiring Challenges Heard at the Small Business Expo

SBLogoTM_0-1Yesterday, the Hireology team joined thousands of small business owners at Navy Pier for the Small Business Expo. The free-to-attend event drew a crowd to Hireology’s booth, where business owners expressed their hatred towards hiring. While the Hireologists assured them that hiring doesn’t have to be so bad, many attendees complained about the same problem. Below is a breakdown of the 5 challenges overheard at the Small Business Expo:

5. “I don’t have time for hiring”

Ok, we get it. You are a small business owner and are so focused on keeping your business running that you don’t have time to spend on hiring. However, if you want your business to be successful you need to hire the right people. And how do you do that? By investing time upfront in order to hire qualified candidates. In doing so, you’ll end up saving thousands of hours down the line.

4. “I get all my resumes to my email inbox”

As if going through your inbox every morning didn’t take long enough, adding applications and resumes to that mix is a sure-fire way to drive yourself crazy. More importantly, having an inbox full of resumes will likely lead you to accidentally skipping over some that have found their way to the bottom of the virtual pile.

Luckily, this is an easy fix. With a hiring platform in place, all those resumes can be submitted to one central location (read not your inbox). Just imagine a world where you are notified anytime a new candidate applies, and having all of their documentation in one place!

3. “I use different platforms for reference checks, background checks, and skills testing”

Having a different platform for every aspect of your hiring process is overkill. The time you spend clicking between each tool and trying to remember when you just ordered five minutes ago is not the way to streamline your hiring process. Instead, invest in one platform. Sure, it may seem like a difficult decision now, but once you do some research and learn what different platforms have to offer, you’ll be able to find one that fits all of your hiring needs – assessments and skills tests included.

2. “I don’t hire enough people to invest in a hiring platform”

According to LinkedIn, the cost of one bad hiring decision can equate to 30 percent of that individual’s first year earning potential. So even if you only hire one person this year, having a hiring platform in place can end up saving you thousands (and the pain of having to replace that person just a few months in).

1. “I ask interview questions off the top of my head”

You wouldn’t walk into an investor pitch without preparing, so why would you do it with an interview? After all, in both cases there is a significant amount of money being dealt with. And don’t even think about Googling those questions. You need to be asking questions that will help you determine what the candidate is capable of, how they approach certain situations, and whether they are a culture fit. In other words, you need an interview guide – and preferably one with a data-back scorecard to help to score the candidate’s answers.
