Yesterday, the Hireology team joined thousands of small business owners at Navy Pier for the Small Business Expo. The free-to-attend event drew a crowd to Hireology’s booth, where business owners expressed their hatred towards hiring. While the Hireologists assured them that hiring doesn’t have to be so bad, many attendees complained about the same problem. Below is a breakdown of the 5 challenges overheard at the Small Business Expo:
5. “I don’t have time for hiring”
Ok, we get it. You are a small business owner and are so focused on keeping your business running that you don’t have time to spend on hiring. However, if you want your business to be successful you need to hire the right people. And how do you do that? By investing time upfront in order to hire qualified candidates. In doing so, you’ll end up saving thousands of hours down the line.
4. “I get all my resumes to my email inbox”
As if going through your inbox every morning didn’t take long enough, adding applications and resumes to that mix is a sure-fire way to drive yourself crazy. More importantly, having an inbox full of resumes will likely lead you to accidentally skipping over some that have found their way to the bottom of the virtual pile.

You wouldn’t walk into an investor pitch without preparing, so why would you do it with an interview? After all, in both cases there is a significant amount of money being dealt with. You need to be asking questions that will help you determine what the candidate is capable of, how they approach certain situations, and whether they are a culture fit. In other words, you need an interview guide – and preferably one with a data-back scorecard to help to score the candidate’s answers.
