3 Hiring Tips for New Franchisees

So you’ve taken the plunge and decided to go into business for yourself. As a new franchise owner you will find yourself having many new roles to fill. Along with over-seeing the logistics and overall day-to-day operations of your business, you will also have to hire the right people to help you along the way. Before you can officially open your doors, you’ll need a team of committed employees to help your franchise hit the ground running.

But with all the different things a new owner might have on their plates, the hiring process can often times fall to the wayside and become a second thought instead of taking a primary role in running your franchise. If you’re a new franchisee in the midst of hiring candidates, here are 3 tips to consider as you approach your grand opening date.

1)    Don’t rush

Finding the right candidate is a process that requires time and patience. Rushing into a decision can lead to hiring the wrong candidate and then, ultimately, only having to repeat the process all over again. Taking your time during the selection process will help ensure that you don’t miss out on hiring the right person during the crucial, early stages of your business.

Also, along with taking your time, consider implementing automated recruitment tools into your candidate search. This can add another layer of validation when looking for the right employee and is a great indicator of their personality and work ethic. Make sure to utilize methods such as pre-screening questions, personality assessments and interview scorecards to help give you a deeper understanding of the types of applicants you are considering.

2)    Ask Corporate

One of the perks of being part of a franchise system is that you are not on your own. There are systems and best practices readily available for you to follow to help you achieve results consistent with your brand. When you agree to own your franchise you sign on to receive all the support and guidance that your franchisor has to offer, which can be especially vital during the beginning stages. Your franchisor is a great source to utilize for advice on what types of people to look for and what types of hiring platforms to use.

3)    Hire Experienced Candidates

Consider recruiting staff who have experience within the same brand. The benefit of hiring someone within a similar system is that they will already have knowledge of how your business operates. Having people who are already familiar with the inner workings of your brand can help ensure that everything is running smoothly while your franchise finds its footing. An experienced employee can also provide the proper guidance your junior staff requires and help make sure they are receiving the proper training from the start.

As a new franchisee, the hiring process may be just another tedious task on your ever-growing list of priorities before you open. However, you must take into consideration how important the right people are for your franchise’s success. In order for your franchise to get up and running properly, you need to find candidates that will help get your business where it needs to be. Remember to take your time finding the right candidates and, if you are ever in doubt, do not hesitate to turn to your franchisor for assistance and support. Finding the right people for your business is not always fun, but it can be a whole lot easier if you know how to approach the task and what tools are available.
