Shannon joined Hireology in September 2018, having spent her full career working in HR, primarily within the finance industry. Just prior to joining Hireology, Shannon worked for a private equity firm, where she did HR consulting out to their portfolio of software technology companies, and then internal HR work for the firm. At Hireology, Shannon is responsible for managing the People team, which includes HR, training/development, talent acquisition, facilities, and administration.
Shannon, can you tell readers a bit about what you’re working on?
I am working on strategies to improve our employee recruitment, retention and engagement at Hireology through more professional development / training programs, Diversity/Equity/Inclusion initiatives and leading our best-in-class People team.
What path did you take to get where you are today?
Interestingly enough, most of my career has been operating as either the only HR employee in a company, or the first employee in a new role for the company. I think because of that experience, I learned early on how important it is for the People function/leader to truly understand the business – if you don’t know how the business operates or what the goals are, it is impossible to manage your human capital intelligently.
What made you decide to join Hireology?
The culture – I was so impressed with how the leadership team members spoke about the culture, and I could see it all my interactions with employees during my interview process. Even when I was just waiting at reception, everyone who walked by would smile and stop to make sure I had been assisted. I could tell there was something special happening in this company, and I really wanted to contribute to it.
What do you find most exciting about working here?
I think the most exciting thing is that we have a company full of people who take pride in modeling our core values at work every day.
What is your favorite core value and why?
Eager to Improve is my favorite – I will be the first to admit that I’m far from perfect, and I love that Hireology empowers everyone to be a little bit vulnerable in both admitting that, and encouraging us to take action on it.
Where in the office do you do your best thinking?
Whatever room I’m in with my People team during our weekly team meetings – they inspire me to be at my best.
How would you define Hireology’s culture?
I would say it is the embodiment of our 5 core values + speed – we are a nimble organization that moves very quickly; I think specifically because those core values enable employees to make decisions and solve problems rapidly.
What is one thing that people don’t know about you?
At my last employer, someone CCed me on an email to Kanye West – he did not reply all.
One of Hireology’s benefits that we offer employees is unlimited vacation. What will you be doing next to utilize this perk?
I’m taking a little over 2 weeks off for the first time in my entire career, and I am really going to try to fully disconnect from all internet, social media, etc. during that time!
