Name: Andre Joseph
Role: Site Reliability Engineer
Andre joined the Hireology team as a Site Reliability Engineer in February 2019. He recently won the “High Five Award” at our team’s annual company kickoff, for continuously exemplifying all five of our Hireology core values.
Prior to Hireology, Andre gained more than 20 years of experience in the IT field and most recently worked as a Level 2 Systems Engineer with a nationwide managed service provider.
Andre, can you tell readers a bit about what you’re working on?
As a Site Reliability Engineer, one of the projects I’m currently working on is improving our disaster recovery process leading up to a fire drill our team will run later this quarter.
What path did you take to get where you are today?
My interest in computers and technology started pretty young. I was 13 years old when I was interviewed as part of a new charter school geared toward emerging technology in education. I remember begging for a Compaq Presario computer after using one in my computer class.
As I got older, I started getting more involved in computer repair and networking. I was in high school when I took my first Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) exam and had an internship with my local city’s IT department. By this time, I knew I wanted to work with computers and help people use them.
I started school at New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) in fall 2003 and had an internship at a tax startup by winter break. After getting my degree in Information Technology, I wanted to try working in all types of sectors like news media, education, and retail. This led me to joining a managed service provider that manages several sectors simultaneously.
What made you decide to join Hireology?
For the past 15 years, I spent time perfecting IT services. I made my way from tech support to managing site-wide projects. I wanted a new challenge. I did some tech consulting work for a client that launched an app. I found the entire process interesting and wanted to learn more about AWS, code deployment and app testing. At this time, I decided I wanted to switch gears in my career.
Site reliability immediately caught my interest because of its merging of concepts I’m familiar with and concepts that were new to me. I wanted to know what it took to become a Site Reliability Engineer. I knew that I would essentially be restarting my career path and took the time to make sure I was ready to make the transition from IT/networking/consulting to site reliability and system operations.
What do you find most exciting about working here?
Every day at Hireology is a learning experience. My colleagues take the time to make sure I understand what it takes to get my projects done. I’m proud of the work I do. I feel valued and I can see that everyone else is valued equally. Every day, I’m shocked at how people naturally embrace the company’s core values.
What is your favorite core value and why?
I don’t really have a favorite core value. Hireology’s core values should be life values. Don’t be an asshole. Own up to your choices, good or bad. Try to be positive, but it’s okay to feel bad at times. Try to create wow moments in your life. You can always improve.
As a remote employee, where do you do your best thinking outside the office?
I have a pretty cool office setup thanks to the Hireology’s technology budget for remote employees. You get this one time expense to upgrade your home office. I used it to get a great chair. My pug Brooklyn will sit with me while I review code. I feel a bit like Dr. Evil but my pug has way more fur on him.
What is one thing that people don’t know about you?
I watched The Goofy Movie VHS (remember when kid’s tapes were bright colors like orange or red!) so much as a kid. I thought Goofy was the coolest Dad. I learned the words to every song and wanted a skateboard like Max. I was 12.
One of Hireology’s benefits that we offer employees is unlimited vacation. What will you be doing next to utilize this perk?
I’m going to actually go on a vacation. In previous roles, I got used to a week or two of paid vacation at most. Thanks to the benefit ,I’m planning my first trip to Europe, then the Middle East for a wedding in Tel Aviv.
