Role: Manager of Customer Development
I joined Hireology in November of 2018 – it’s hard to believe it’s almost been almost a year! I was the first external hire to join our newly established upsell team and was recently promoted to Manager of Customer Development. In the beginning, we worked hard to figure out this space and the best approach to servicing our customers and also drive revenue at the same time. We’re still figuring out new ways to do our jobs every day, but we’re always eager to improve! Since then, the team quickly grew to what it is today with 13 outstanding team members.
Joe, can you tell readers a bit about what you’re working on?
My main priority is building relationships with our customers and adding value to their subscription. Hitting quota is objective #1.
Outside of that, I’ve taken on a few really interesting projects over the past few months. In particular, my rock during the third quarter was to revamp our demo decks for our background checks, drug screens and onboarding offerings. It was fun diving into the details of these services, updating the content, and working together with marketing to put together a beautiful presentation.
What path did you take to get where you are today?
I graduated from the University of Central Florida in 2015 with a business degree and spent my first year out of college working as a consultant. The next year, I had the opportunity to return to the classroom and earn my MBA. I completed an accelerated program that allowed me to graduate with my master’s degree in just 12 months, wrapping up in the summer of 2017. I then landed in the sales organization of an upstart SaaS company in downtown Orlando.
After moving to Chicago in the summer of 2018, I was looking for a job in tech all over the city. I must have applied to over 30 positions and felt like job hunting was full-time work in itself! My cousin Marcee worked here at the time and recommended I apply to join Hireology’s team. I’m so glad I did!
What made you join Hireology?
I initially applied because of Marcee’s recommendation, but I stayed because of the amazing team here. From the very first phone call with Elise and the organization of the interview process, I was impressed. When I came into the office for the first time, I remember immediately feeling like I could fit in here. I also really enjoy the challenge of establishing processes within an organization and being in a position to “figure things out.” I knew the upsell team was brand new and we’d be trying out different things for the first time.
What do you find most exciting about working here?
You never know what’s going to happen next! Is there going to be a new product release? Helping on a project with another department? Problem solving something for a customer? Every day really is tackling different problems and coming to the table with solutions.
Outside of that, I really do appreciate the team here and have so much fun with my fellow Hireologists. My good friend Johnny Bartlett used to say, “going to work is just working on random projects all day with your best friends,” and that’s exactly how I feel here.
What is your favorite core value and why?
Pathological optimism. Things are going to happen that are good, bad, and ugly, but we need to find the silver lining and make the most of the situation.
One of my favorite quotes is by Charles R. Swindoll, and it goes “life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.” You’re never going to be able to control what’s going on around you, but you can always control how you respond to the situation. I try to approach each day with a sense of optimism and positive energy.
How do you contribute to Hireology’s culture?
Hawaiian. Shirt. Fridays.
Is it silly? Of course. But I think wearing fun floral shirts on Fridays puts you in a good mood and welcomes the day with energy. By the time Friday morning rolls around, it’s easy to feel drained from the grind of the previous four workdays, but if there’s something I can do to liven up the day, I’m going to do it. Hawaiian shirt Fridays are my thing.
Outside of that, I just try to be friendly with everyone. I try to engage with as many departments as I can and build real relationships with people. If we’re going to spend most of our time at work, we should take special interest in those who are doing the same.
Where in the office do you do your best thinking?
I think best at my desk. I love bouncing ideas off my teammates as well as hearing other people on the phones interacting with customers. It helps me stay in check with my own motivation when I hear the office buzzing around me. But if that gets to be too much, I do have a pair of noise-canceling headphones that are put to great use.
How would you define Hireology’s culture?
Hireology’s culture really is unique. It seems like everyone here has mastered the skill of balancing work and fun, and I really appreciate that. Across all our teams, we know how to have a good time with one another, but we also know how to put our heads down and get our jobs done.
I also think Hireology’s culture is extremely diverse. Not just in ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, and socioeconomic backgrounds, but also in unique interests. I could have conversations throughout the day that cover sports, politics, pop culture, music theory and history.
What is one thing that people don’t know about you?
I’m a classically trained pianist and have been playing since I was 11 years old. Unfortunately I don’t play as often as I should anymore, but can still work the keys!
One of Hireology’s benefits that we offer employees is unlimited vacation. What will you be doing next to utilize this perk?
In November I’m taking my wife to Orlando for her birthday to see the Jonas Brothers. I guess I really am a “sucker”…
