I’m going to be honest here. I am in no way claiming myself a basketball fan. I’ve seen a few Bulls games here or there, but not enough to distinguish myself from every other bandwagon fan that cheered them on during the playoffs.
If my tragic 8th grade basketball career tells me anything, it’s that I have no idea what I’m doing when someone tosses me a basketball. Fortunately, having literally zero basketball talent can’t keep me from enjoying a quality NBA Finals game.
With that being said, the Spurs played the Heat Tuesday night and let me tell you… it was awesome. The combination of the energy in the building and the intensity on the court was nothing short of spectacular.
In case you missed it, the Heat were losing for much of the fourth quarter. But after a quick rally and a last second three-pointer from Ray Allen, they eventually claimed victory over the Spurs in OT.
Being the avid blogger that I am, I couldn’t help but compare the Heat’s performance throughout the game to that of any successful business. Here are two tips that you can take away from the game to help you manage your team members and continue building a great company culture.
What’s a good team without proper communication? The Heat may have arguably one of the best rosters in the NBA, but if they don’t have the proper communication skills, they wouldn’t have gotten nearly as far as they did this year.
The third quarter consisted of plenty of Spurs offense combined with a lack of Heat defense. I can’t count on one hand the number of defensive mistakes they made stemming from a lack of communication.
As any successful team grows and you hire more people, communication is vital to ensure that the employees stay on track and get their job done effectively. If your employees aren’t properly notified of your company’s goals, be prepared to suffer on the scoreboard.
Times of hardship truly test the company culture you create with your employees. When the going get’s tough, you want your leaders to step up and take the reigns of their department. Whether you are hiring new teammembers or powering through changes in management, leadership is the only way to come out successful.
One of the biggest flaws I noticed in the Miami Heat is their lack of stable leadership. Heat captains LeBron James and Dwayne Wade let their emotions take control in the third quarter (not in a good way). While we encourage enthusiastic and emotional employees, we can’t emphasize the importance of strong-willed leaders.
Your employees look up to you. If they see that you’re an emotional wreck, they aren’t going to be motivated to work for you. The lack of leadership and emotional stability of the Miami Heat showed in the third quarter, and it showed in their play.
The Heat turned their game around when their leaders did. James, for instance, scored 16 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter. Not to mention, his constant nagging at the ref stopped at the end of the third as well. Similarly, when your leaders decide to act like leaders, your employees will follow. That’s all the Heat needed in the end.
