Millennials get a lot of flak for being needy and high maintenance. And although there’s always going to be a few who are like that, the majority of Gen-Yers can make for a valuable addition to any team. 

So if you’re still unsure whether you should take a risk and hire a millennial, take a look below. If any of the following statements relate to you or your company, it may mean that you’re is desperate need of a millennal employee.

1. Your work-life balance is severely lacking

Get to the office at 7:20, leave at 6:15. Sit in traffic. Make dinner. Watch Dancing With the Stars. Go to bed. 

Does this sound like your day? If so, chances are you need to reevaluate your work life balance. Sure, it’s important to get all your work done on time, but it’s also important to leave time for yourself.

Most millennials are pros when it comes to managing their work/life schedule. They’re happy to work a 12 hour day on Wednesday and Thursday to get everything done, but you can count on them leaving around 2:30 on Friday afternoon. They are well aware of what it takes to succeed, and taking a break from work can help boost their productivity the next day.

2. You’re still running Windows Vista on your computer

Vista has been available to the general market since 2007. Six years may not seem that long, but in the computer world, it’s a century. Believe it or not, there’s been quite a few operating systems launched since Vista – and much more efficient ones at that.

Once you hand over that offer letter, ask the millennial to help you upgrade. Whether it be Windows 8 or Mac OSx Mountain Lion, they’ll know how to install and use the platform.

3. You can’t remember the last time someone brought a fresh perspective to the table

If there’s one thing you’ve taken away from all those brainstorming sessions, what would it be? Sleeping with your eyes open? Well if that’s the case, you’re definitely in need of a millennial. They’re full of ideas, some better than others, but they’re not afraid share. So if you want to get the creative juices flowing again, hire a Gen-Yer.

4. Your company’s social media presence is non-existent

Whether you’re hiring an accountant or marketing manager, 99.99 percent (ok, maybe 99.91 percent) of millennials will be able to develop and launch social media pages for your company. It doesn’t have to be fancy, but a social media presence gets your name out there and can be a great resource to draw in new leads and customers. Plus, it can be helpful when recruiting more millennials down the line.

5. You haven’t received (or given) constructive feedback in years

When was the last time you sat down with your superior to evaluate your efforts. And no, we’re not just talking a scolding here and pat on the back there, we mean a thorough evaluation. 

Millennials thrive on feedback – positive and otherwise. So by bringing a Gen Yer onto your team, chances are you’ll become more comfortable providing feedback and critiques. And before you know it, the entire company will be conducting annual (or monthly) evaluations.
