These days, tattoos, as well as other body modifications including piercings, are growing to become something that is not out of the ordinary. According to the Pew Research Center, 36% of 18-25 year olds are tattooed and 40% of 26-40 year olds are tattooed. These statistics show that a large amount of the nation is tattooed.
Previously, tattoos were not often accepted in the workplace, or candidates were employed if their tattoos were able to be covered. However, since the amount of people who have tattoos is on the rise, more industries are beginning to be accepting of tattoos in the workplace and are hiring more candidates with body modifications.
Business is always forward-moving and always innovating.
As the amount of people who have tattoos grows, so does the amount of people who accept tattoos.
It is smart for companies to continue to be forward-moving and be open minded. It’s often said that if you’re not moving forward you will be left behind. This is completely the case when it comes to tattoos in the workplace. It’s important for a company to consider the fact that a candidate with tattoos might be the perfect candidate. If they are ignored because of their appearance or physical characteristics, the company could be missing out big time. The benefits and talent that come from these candidates might surprise you more than the images on their skin.
It is true that you may lose some conservative clients who are not accepting of doing business with clients who have tattoos and you may not want tattoos being the brand of your company. However, accepting tattoos into the workplace with also open up opportunities for reaching an entirely new market that you otherwise might not have been able to read.
Still hesitant about hiring on candidates who are covered in ink?
That’s okay! You don’t need to take the risk and make the step right now. However, in the future the baby boomer generation will be rotated out of the job market and the 36%+ of new, tattooed candidate will be rotated in. Eventually, tattoos and other body modifications will be completely normal and accepted in the workplace.
